Opportunity Statement
Dexterra is seeking compact, scalable, and low-maintenance technologies to manage food waste at its remote hospitality camps across Canada. These camps face high logistical costs for waste transportation and disposal, making on-site circular food waste management and conversion solutions with strong return on investment (ROI) a top priority. Solutions must be wildlife-proof, resistant to tampering or damage, free from odour and leakage – and suitable for remote northern environments.
Context
Dexterra owns 14 camps and operates over 112 workforce camps nationwide, many located in northern regions where food and food waste must be trucked in and out. Food waste presents significant operational and sustainability challenges, from high disposal costs to attracting wildlife. Dexterra aims to scale circular, on-site solutions that safely convert food waste into usable resources such as energy, fertilizer, or compost. Solutions must be compact, cold-climate ready, and deployable without major infrastructure changes.

The Opportunity
Dexterra is actively improving its food services and waste systems, with pilot projects already underway. While this challenge focuses on Dexterra-owned camps, successful solutions could be extended to the broader network of client owned camps. European SMEs with energy-efficient, compact, and low-servicing solutions will find strong alignment, especially those demonstrating reliability in off-grid and cold-weather conditions. Demand from Indigenous and government clients for sustainable, circular food systems further strengthens the opportunity. Selected solutions may be piloted across multiple camp sites.
